CHANDLER FILM SERIES

Chandler Center for the Arts presents the second of seven classic comic films in its 2011-12 film series this Sunday evening, November 20.  The Lady Eve, generally considered one of the best romantic comedies ever made, stars Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda.

Rick Winston, regular commentator for the Chandler series, will open the evening with a lecture on the significance of this lightning-paced 1940 film in the great Hollywood comic tradition, the extraordinary contributions of director and screenwriter Preston Sturges to the genre, and the remarkable performance of Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve’s central role.

During Q & A, which follows the screening, the audience gets a chance to comment on the movie.  At the Buster Keaton night last month interest in the film and lecture presentation was so intense that no one left Chandler until the last comment was registered.

The Upper Gallery doors open at 6:15 p.m. for socializing. Free canapés and popcorn will be served and wine, beer and soda will be offered at a cash bar.

This 2011-12 Chandler film series in Randolph is twice as big as last year’s – eight events in all, each on the third Sunday evening of the month through April.  In December the 1954 French classic Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday with Jacques Tati -- a great family movie for the holidays -- will be featured.  Other films later this season are Duck Soup with the Marx Brothers in January, Woody Allen’s Zelig in February, The Firemen’s Ball, directed by Milos Foreman, in March, and The Lavender Hill Mob, starring Alec Guiness, in April – all with commentary by Rick Winston.

A grant from the John M. Bissell Foundation is making possible a greatly improved projection system this year.

Tickets are available at the door for $8.  Admission for members of the Chandler Film Society and for students is $5.  Individual Film Society memberships are available for $30 each.  Family memberships (two members) are $50.  2011-12 memberships may be purchased by calling Betsy Cantlin at 802/431-0204 or emailing outreach@chandler-arts.org.
